8 a day
Tuesday, May 5th, 2009Welcome to issue 2, my how time flies. These are exciting times for me with the launch of a new sports nutrition clinic in partnership with True Zone Training (site temporarily unavailable) and the addition of some exciting nutritional and metabolic analysis tools.
8 a day!
In the nutritional news a recent study in the Journal of Nutrition has reported that increased consumption of antioxidant carotenoids may reduce the risk of developing metabolic syndrome by as much as 50%.
- Carotenoids are obtained mostly from fruit and vegetables, the most well known being lycopene found in tomatoes.
- Metabolic syndrome is characterised by central obesity, high blood pressure and poor insulin response and is strongly associated with increased risk of type 2 diabetes and heart disease.
Can there be a better reason for you and your kids to establish an 8 a day regime? I know it’s supposed to be 5 a day but we have clearly failed in that challenge with only 12% of the population achieving it. So, with my twisted logic, 8 a day is my challenge to you. Rise to it, enjoy it, eat a rainbow of food and be glad you aren’t in Japan as their target is a staggering 17 portions (4 of fruit and 13 of vegetable) a day!
Inspired Times
I’ve written more about metabolic syndrome and diabetes in an article for a new magazine called Inspired Times. It’s a magazine that takes a look at the inspirational side of life instead of the doom and uncertainty that dominates the media. Its a great project and I’m really happy to support it. Check out their site or better still pay £10.00 for a yearly supply of this wonderful quarterly.
Metabolic analysis
Whether weight management, fitness, or athletic performance are your goals, metabolic assessments provide detailed information about your caloric needs and about how your body burns fat. You’ll know, from a sound, scientific perspective, what your body requires to operate at its best.

Running
Those of you who know me know that I’m a keen runner and the Bristol 10k is the latest in a series of races I’ve entered this year. I’m hoping to reach my target time of 45 minutes but have a feeling that might be slightly ambitious at this point. If you who live in the Bristol area come along and enjoy the atmosphere and the joy of a traffic free town centre on a Sunday morning.
Events
Thursday 21sy May 6.00pm – 7.00pm I’ll be presenting a talk titled ‘well woman’ at The Better Food Company. We’ll take a brief look at the 10 elements of good health and the 3 most common female health problems. I’ll provide notes and there may even be a little food to taste and try. The talk is FREE but it would be a great help if you were to register your interest by emailing me jamie@jamierichards.co.uk
